Description: This species is a member of the type genus of the family Parulidae (wood warblers), small, usually colorful birds of the New World. Unlike their Old World namesakes, they do not warble, but most have pleasant, relatively simple songs. (The Northern Parula sings a loud, ascending trill.) Ironically, the name is derived from the Latin parra, a bird whose call was thought to be a bad omen.
