Location: South Pacific Ocean off Kaikoura Peninsula, Kaikoura District, Canterbury, New ZealandDescription: Gibson's race, D. e. gibsoni, folding wings after settling onto water. This is a more complex process than for most birds because of the extreme length of the wings. After fledging, it takes 10-15 years for this species to acquire definitive (adult) plumage. This bird is near the lower end of that range. |
